Just one roll. No second chances.
The One Roll Challenge strips photography back to its purest form. Armed with just one camera, one lens, and a single roll of 35mm film, you'll craft a narrative or cohesive series entirely in-camera.
Every frame counts. There's no safety net, and no post-processing magic.
HOW IT WORKS
This challenge is simple but demanding. You'll shoot one complete roll of film from start to finish, then share every frame in the exact order it was captured. The triumphs, the mistakes, and everything in between.
Create a narrative thread or series that engages viewers from first frame to last. Whether it's a day in the life, an exploration of light and shadow, human connections, or abstract concepts – your story unfolds through sequencing and thoughtful composition.
"This isn't about perfection. It's about intention, adaptation, and the beautiful unpredictability that happens when you commit fully."
Some of our most powerful images might be the ones we initially considered mistakes.
THE RULES
Film Format: 35mm only
Full frame: 24-36 exposures
Half frame: 48-72 exposures
Camera: Any 35mm film camera
No digital cameras
One lens recommended, but optional
Sequential Order: All images must be presented in the exact order they were captured
No Editing: What comes off the roll is what the world sees
WHY TAKE THE CHALLENGE
Working with constraints sharpens your vision. Every frame forces you to truly see before you shoot. You learn to trust your instincts without endless options.
This challenge teaches one to think in sequences, to anticipate moments, and to commit fully to each exposure. Find a balance between discipline and play - transform casual shooting into intentional storytelling.
READY TO BEGIN
We welcome submissions and will feature impressive One Roll entries in this scrapbook. Your work could be showcased alongside other photographers who've embraced the challenge and created something remarkable with just 36 frames.
